Tony Shalhoub as Adrian
Monk, the defective detective, suffers from insomnia on tonight's season finale entitled “Mr. Monk Is Up All Night.” In typical
Monk fashion, the REM-deprived Adrian manages to dive into another mystery as he struggles to regain his ability to slumber.
When
Monk collides with an unfamiliar woman on the street, his nocturnal habits are thrown into chaos and the obsessive-compulsive sleuth is unable to sleep for days. Short of driving even a home shopping network host insane,
Monk visits his shrink, Dr. Charles Kroger, played by Stanley Kamel.

Why are there only 9 episodes in Season Six and nearly twice that in other seasons?

I just love this show..it's addicting...Monk is like Pringles..you can't just eat one Pringle and you can't...
Monk is clearly troubled over his insomnia but is unwilling to heed Dr. Kroger's advice to take sleep inducing medicine. As worried as he is about his inability to grab some winks, Adrian is even more fixated over the strange woman he bumped into. Something about her refuses to leave his every thought and consciousness. Dr. Kroger thinks she might be a figure from one of
Monk's previous cases or perhaps,
Monk has developed an attraction to this mysterious female.
Series star, Tony Shalhoub, gave only the slightest hint of his character's potentially serendipitous encounter.
"He literally bumps into a woman on the street,” the 53-year old actor said. “She's a total stranger, but he can't get her out of his head. I don't want to give too much away, because it's a poignant ending."
Shalhoub even went on to say that a possible romantic angle like Dr. Kroger suggested may be an opportune change. His character has shied away from any amorous dalliances since his beloved wife, Trudy, was killed prior to the start of the series.
"It may be time to open that door," Shalhoub admitted, "and not a moment too soon."
The season finale features Donal Logue of
Grounded for Life and
Knights of Prosperity as guest star. He plays a spirited scoundrel who has an amusing meeting with
Monk.
Monk's sixth season finale airs at 9 tonight on the USA Network.
