If
The Middleman creator Javier Grillo-Marxuach were to be believed, the first season finale of the sci-fi series, which airs tonight at 10pm on ABC Family, will be “a bigger, better,
Middleman than anything that's come before it.”
On a more distressing note, Grillo-Marxuach himself admits that he is uncertain that the fate of the show is very much uncertain and “that's really no secret.” It is true, especially if you look at the ratings, that
The Middleman is really on quite shaky grounds as to whether it will be renewed or not. Nevertheless, he wants to end it on a positive note, that, indeed, “all is right in the world,” and this is what he wants the final episode of its maiden run to reflect.
“I thought, really, that's the best note to end the season on. Leave it on a note of optimism."
Warning: Minor spoilers ahead.
Zap2it.com reports that the season finale will explore a familiar, yet still fascinating dimension of the sci-fi genre: an alternate universe. An evil guy named the Palindrome is able to make physical contact with his mirror self in an alternate universe. The catch is that his mirror self is a good guy.
When he decides to go to the said alternate reality, Wendy decides to go with him and discovers how different things are in that place. She then goes on to discover, for instance, that her vegetarian roommate Lacey eats meat, that android school marm Ida is a hot blonde, and Middleman is a grimy, eyepatch-wearing, mullet-haired solider of fortune.
Meanwhile, regardless of whether
The Middleman sings or not sings its final hurray tonight, Grillo-Marxuach maintains he has no regrets.
"ABC Family was the only network out there that took a look at the script and said, 'We want to make this show exactly the way you want to make it.' Doing 12 episodes that are my vision as opposed to 129 that are compromised and watered down, is priceless," he clarifies.
"They love the show," he concludes.

The Middleman tonight at 10pm on ABC Family.
