Another medical-themed series is set to join the likes of House and Grey's Anatomy as Fox picks up a new medical-mystery drama called Mental. First shot at Fox TeleColombia in the Colombian capital Bogota, Mental is scheduled to premiere on May 26.
The upcoming series chronicles young, dynamic psychiatrist Dr. Jack Gallagher (Chris Vance of Prison Break) who becomes the director of Mental Health Services at a Los Angeles hospital. Dr. Gallagher will need to reconcile his "radically unorthodox" but effective treatment methods with his conservative boss, hospital administrator Nora Skoff (Annabella Sciorra of The Sopranos), with whom he shares a romantic past.
Episode by episode, Gallagher encounters patients who are battling unknown and often misdiagnosed conditions. He needs to dig deep into his patients' mind in order to find long-term solutions to their conditions which might be key to their long-term recovery. His "mysterious ability to get into the brains of his patients" leads Gallagher to do potentially strange treatments to patients.
Other than his patients and his boss, Gallagher also has to deal with Veronica (Jacqueline McKenzie), an ambitious and sexy rival psychiatrist in the hospital and Carl (Derek Webster), a seemingly nice attending who harbors secret and deep hatred for Gallagher. The rest of the cast includes Arturo (Nicholas Gonzalez), a junior resident who's addicted to women and Chloe (Marisa Ramirez), a young doctor whose sexual orientation leaves her immune to Arturo's moves.
Mental is executive-produced by Deborah Joy LeVine, creator of drama series
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and Lifetime series
The Division. She's also the executive producer of
Any Day Now, Dawson's Creek and CBS's
Early Edition.
Fox will air the first of the 13 episodes it ordered of
Mental on May 26 9pm.
