Get ready to hop on board the So You Think You Can Dance
train as we arrive to see the top 20 perform. This week, we will get to see our favorite dancers team up for the first competitive dances of this season. We will also have a chance to learn a little more about the contestants.
And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that we'll get to see what Cat Deeley is wearing! Once again, I am guessing something sparkly, but I could be wrong.
Tonight, the dancers perform for your votes to avoid elimination next week. How will your favorite dancer fare tonight?
This is the So You Think You Can Dance
We start with a group dance to "Puttin' on the Ritz," which actually starts outside, and confused me for a second. The dancers dance around backstage, which is cute. Even Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy are part of the routine.
Our dancing hostess, Cat Deeley, is wearing a pink dress, which is not very sparkly. (My bad!) Tonight, our judges are joined by guest judge Wayne Brady. The dancers have 10 seconds to tell us about themselves. Fun!
Mariah Spears and Carlos GarlandJive choreographed by Jason Gilkison
Mariah sleeps with her eyes open, and Carlos is a second-degree black belt. The dance is not my favorite dance. I feel like there is a lack of chemistry between them. Mary Murphy feels that the routine is "labored." Jasmine Mason and Alan BerstenContemporary choreographed by Travis Wall
Jasmine really, really loves cats, and Alan is the youngest of three siblings. Travis blindfolds the dancers to drive home the theme of the dance, which is that love is blind. I have no idea how they are dancing blindfolded and making it look so easy! (Which is clearly why I am not a dancer.) The audience loves it, as do the judges. Malece Miller and Jade ZuberiJazz choreographed by Travis Wall
Malece does not like feet, and Jade does not like spiders or clowns. The couple channels old Hollywood glamour for a dramatic routine that I really love. Malece and Jade seem to have great chemistry. Nigel Lythgoe saw the routine during dress rehearsal, and tells them that they danced it badly. Tonight, they dance it well.Jenna Johnson and Tucker KnoxBroadway choreographed by Tyce Diorio
Jenna flubs her introduction and wants to start over. Tucker doesn't like to eat plain food. The dance involves a clothesline and sheets. It is a fun and flirty routine. Mary Murphy says that she was dancing in her seat. Wayne Brady is temporarily at a loss for words. Nigel tells them that they are a "power couple." Brittany Cherry and Dorian "Blu-Print" HectorAfro-Jazz choreographed by Sean Cheesman
Brittany can stick six spoons on her face, and Blu-Print likes rollercoasters. This is a physical and mesmerizing routine. Cat Deeley tries to show off her dancing skills, and hilarity ensues! Nigel Lythgoe tells Blu-Print that it is one of the best routines he has seen from an untrained dancer. Mary Murphy, our So You Think You Can Dance
conductor, puts them on the hot tamale train. And Now for Something Completely Different
Nigel Lythgoe and the ever-so-shy Adam Shankman demonstrate some dance moves for National Dance Day, which is July 27. Cat points out there is a lot of hip action. Let's leave it there, shall we?Alexis Juliano and Nico GreethamHip-Hop choreographed by Christopher Scott
Alexis is a huge Justin Bieber fan, and Nico is bilingual. Marco and Cyrus assist with the lesson. The routine is not impressive, and the judges feel the same way. Alexis and Nico are lacking swag, and it shows. Makenzie Dustman and Paul KarmiryanViennese Waltz choreographed by Jason Gilkison
Makenzie has a pet fish but enjoys sushi, and Paul always has a smile on his face. This routine tells a classic love story, and the dancers perform a graceful and lovely waltz. The judges are all pleased.Jasmine Harper and Aaron Turner
Jazz choreographed by Sonya Tayeh
Jasmine likes killer whales, and Aaron is a Las Vegas DJ. Sonya says that the routine is "aggressive," and I am shocked! (Not really.) This is one of my favorite performances of the night. It is dark and riveting. Wayne Brady tells Aaron that he is a sexy cat. (Yes, really.) I do believe that we have another powerful pair to be reckoned with. Hayley Erbert and Curtis HollandHip-Hop choreographed by Christopher Scott
Hayley has a sweet tooth, and we learn that Curtis talks in his sleep. This sexy routine shows off the chemistry between them. The judges like their swag and technique. I like it, too.Amy Yakima and DuShaunt "Fik-Shun" StegallContemporary choreographed by Sonya Tayeh
Amy loves Christmas socks, and Fik-Shun has two dogs and his favorite color is red. The routine is dark and very dramatic. It is also very athletic. The judges give a standing ovation, and Sonya seems moved as well. Amy and Fik-Shun both receive complimentary reviews. Nigel Lythgoe tells Amy that she is "a beast," which is great praise indeed.Voting Begins Tonight
