Following the success of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, ABC Family has another series which it hopes will conquer the same demo that Secret Life has.
Make It or Break It, premiering tonight 9pm, is a brand new series set against the backdrop of competitive gymnastics. It follows a group of teen Olympic hopefuls as they prepare for their day in the spotlight. Frasier's Peri Gilpin stars the team's coach, with the cast including Chelsea Hobbs as Emily Kmetco, Ayla Kell as top gymnast Payson Keeler, Josie Loren as Kaylie Cruz and Zachary Burr Abel as Carter Anderson. Make It or Break It also marks the return to television of Full House child star Candace Cameron Bure.
Set at exclusive Colorado training center The Rock, Make It or Break It
follows Kmetko, a nice but unfashionable newcomer who arrives on scholarship. In true and typical high school fashion, her arrival threatens the stature of queen bee Lauren Tanner, played by Cassie Scerbo who is as ruthless as her father Steve, played by Tony Starke. Elsewhere, Gilpin plays the well-adjusted mother of perfectionist Payson.
The creator of Make It or Break it
, which was picked up by ABC Family for 10 episodes last fall, says the idea for the show was finalized after a meeting with ABC Family management and her idea of young kids focusing on their career.
"We hear a lot of pitches about sports and that kind of arena, but Holly's pitch about kids with serious careers had an insider's point of view yet was so relatable," says ABC Family programming exec Kate Juergens.
Bure, who was a last-minute addition to the cast, is best recognized for her stint on the eight-season run of Full House
on ABC up to 1995.
