The
awards season is in full swing and this morning the nominations were
announced for the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Honoring the
best in film and television, the SAG Awards tend to be quite
conservative, recognizing big names over smaller, more deserving shows.
The nominations are largely what you'd expect with many repeat nominees from
30 Rock,
Modern Family,
Mad Men and
Homeland.
Downton Abbey made a big splash with three nominations and new faces include Louis C.K. for
Louie and Jeff Daniels for
The Newsroom. Amy Poehler's nomination for
Parks and Recreation marks the first time that show has been recognized by the SAG Awards, though the fact that it was left out of the ensemble race in favor of
Glee and
The Office is still mind-boggling.
Also interesting is that, while cable shows dominated the drama side, HBO's pair of Emmy-nominated new comedies
Girls and
Veep didn't get recognized, not even 11-time nominee Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Maggie Smith and Nicole Kidman both managed to earn double nominations in film and television. Smith was nominated for
Downton Abbey and
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel while Kidman picked up nominations for the TV movie
Hemingway and Gellhorn and the Zaf Efron movie
The Paperboy.
On the film side,
Lincoln,
Les Miserables and
Silver Linings Playbook all received four nominations.
The SAG Awards tend to be slightly more predictable than most awards shows. In the TV comedy categories, Alec Baldwin has won the past six years in a row for
30 Rock while Betty White has won the past two years for
Hot in Cleveland (with Tina Fey winning the three years before for
30 Rock). All of them are nominated again this year.
Here is a complete list of the nominees.
