Take the BuddyTV Personality Quiz: What Lost Character Are You?

Matthew Fox as Jack Shephard

Born on July 14, 1966 in Abington, Pennsylvania, Matthew Fox grew up in Crowheart, Wyoming, where his family owned a horse ranch. He graduated from Wind River High School in Pavillion, Wyoming, and spent one year at Deerfield Academy, and from there enrolled as an Economics major at Columbia University. Fox was a football player for the said university and was affiliated with the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He pursued the art of acting after his graduation in 1998 by attending the Atlantic Theater Company and the School for Film and Television in New York City.

Originally, Fox wanted to become a successful Wall Street Broker, but got diverted into modeling along the way. His first television role came when he was twenty-five years old, and it was for the popular series Wings. He then landed a starring role on the short-lived drama series Freshman Dorm, and upon the show’s cancellation, tried to gain more exposure by accepting supporting roles in shows like If I Die Before I Wake. Before long, Fox was starring in the ensemble family drama Party of Five, where he portrayed Charlie Salinger. When the show ended after a successful six-season run, Fox ventured into another series, Haunted. In 2004, Fox stepped into a casting session for a new J.J. Abrams production called Lost. He was hoping to nail the part of "Sawyer", a dark and mysterious loner, but instead found himself picking up the reigns of the castaways leader and bed-side-manner-challenged doctor Jack Shepard. The role not only gave Fox a hefty salary, but also earned him a 2006 Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series-Drama and a 2005 Satellite Award for Best Actor in a Series, Drama.

For the big screen, his film credits include We Are Marshall, Smokin’ Aces and Vantage Point. Fox’s acting achievements are further highlighted by his appearances in many magazines, which include a 1996 edition of People Magazine, wherein he was considered as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World.
