Locke is the leader of the Others.  Sawyer and Juliet are back on the island, and neither are particularly big fans of those Others or Locke.  Someone has to lead, band all the non-Others together, and Juliet and Sawyer are the most likely candidates.  Sawyer, who doesn't appear to have a lot of story left to tell in his current state, would be greatly helped by a change of character, a maturation process culminating in his appointment as a leader.  Who knows – without Jack as the leader, Sawyer may have risen up a lot earlier.  Now that Jack is gone, it's time for Sawyer to grow up.
