Rob McElhenney (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) made his
LOST debut as the hapless guard Aldo (Nova?) with a passing interest in physics. In these two shots, we see that Aldo is studying Stephen Hawking's 'A Brief History of Time', yet another emergence of time in the subtext of
LOST. The chapter he is reading is Chapter seven, all about black holes and bending, you guessed it, time. For some good scans

And of course what LOST episode would be complete without a random appearance of the numbers? Or at least one of them. The LOST number lucky enough to get airtime this week is the number 23. 23 is a good choice not only because of Jim Carrey's new movie (which I'm dying to see) but also because the number has a rich history in mythology.

And then of course is the infamous brainwashing sequence that follows. The movie is full of images that seem to symbolize progress, and evolution. For instance this one:

I've inset a picture of the Edison cylinder which is set amongst the cd's as an illustration that this picture does symbolize progression. The Edison cylinder was a hardened wax tube that was used to record sound waves, it is one of the earliest continuous recording devices. The cd's, of course, symbolize current technology. Throughout the video there are several such scenes, although not always fitting this motif. For instance in one sequence we see dolls progress to religious icons. In the end our good friends Alvar Hanso and Dr. Dagroot make an appearance.
LOST is very well known for it's 'blink or you'll miss it' freeze-frame-required moments and Not in Portland had at least one. When poor Edmund got smacked by the bus, you could barely see an Apollo bar advert whiz by.
