'Lost' Season 5 Hint #4: Flashbacks or Flash Forwards?

ABC has generously screened the first two hours of Lost season 5 for critics, and while we won't be giving away all the major details, BuddyTV will give a little tidbit about what you can see in these two hours every weekday leading up to the premiere on January 21 at 9pm on ABC.

Ever since the Oceanic 6 made it off the Island, fans have wondered how this would affect the structure of Lost. The show is heavily based on the idea of flashbacks or flash forwards in every episode, but now that everyone is in a different place, that doesn’t really work.

For today’s hint about the season 5 premiere, I will tell you that the traditional structure is pretty much gone. The story is told through the Oceanic 6 as Ben and Jack plot to get every back and the story back on the Island, three years earlier.

In addition, these first two episodes appear to do away with the notion that episodes focus on a single character. Some people might claim that the second hour is a Hurley-centric episode, but it’s not the same and the episode still features everyone else.

Trying to figure out how episodes will be structured based on these first two hours isn’t easy, especially since the structure will most likely change midway through the season. Either way, you should be prepared for a whole new kind of Lost that relies less on tricky flashbacks and flash forwards and more on the actual story of what’s happening in the characters’ present.
