Lost

-Drama A plane crashes on the way from Sydney to L.A., landing on an uncharted island, leaving a group of survivors to fend for themselves. Sounds like “Castaway”, right? Wrong. Lost, the groundbreaking drama from ABC, manages to reinvent the stranded on a desert island wheel, combining adventure, drama, sci-fi and horror to produce one of the most captivating television experiences in years. Mystery abounds, dense as the island's forests, not allowing viewers to miss a single second of action on Lost.

Yunjin Kim, LostFor the first time in the history of this show, Lost made me cry last night. I had a sneaking suspicion as to what was going to happen when Sun (Yunjin Kim) saw Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) walk by while delivering her baby, but I didn't want to believe it. I refused to accept what I knew was coming.

Perhaps I'm an idiot, because I didn't fully put it together until Hurley (Jorge Garcia) arrived. Lost got me. When Jin said he'd only been married for two months, I had no idea what was happening. Honestly, I thought, for some reason, after getting off the island, Sun and Jin split up and he got remarried. Either I'm that gullible, or the Lost writers have gotten that much better at deception.

Jin's death hit me hard, like a ton of bricks. It wasn't made any easier by the fact that Yunjin Kim is such a beautiful, vulnerable actress that she gives me no choice but to sympathize with her. Unlike every other survivor of Oceanic Flight 815, Sun and Jin have yet to produce a sub-par episode whenever the spotlight is on them. That relationship is so rich and textured, and the actors are so brilliant, that every time the story focuses on their flashbacks or flash forwards, it's pure genius.

This is easily my favorite episode of the season so far. Think about the pure complexity of the script, fully convincing viewers that we are seeing a flash forward when, in reality, we're seeing two completely different years. Then think about the fact that the “huge” reveal of Michael on the boat was dispatched without the giant fanfare most Lost twists receive. That wasn't the big surprise of the episode, and the writers were smart enough to know it.

Anyway, I could rave and rave about Yunjin Kim and Daniel Dae Kim for pages and pages, but we're here for the Easter eggs, and there are some doozies in this one, and it helps if you haven't completely blocked Nikki and Paulo from your memories. Yes, they're back! Sort of.
