LOST 3.10 Tricia Tanaka is Dead - PREVIEW!
Wednesday, February 28, 2007
At long last. LOST has spent so much time in the corridors of Dharma this season, I’m smelling it on my clothes! Tonight, thankfully, it’s back to the sunshine and chlorophyll engorged foliage of the beach! Back to Hurley, Sun, Jin, Claire, Sayid, Locke, Paulo, and Nikki. Well, okay we can forget about Paulo and Nikki for right now… but back to the BEACH, where viewers originally fell in love with LOST and the natural beauty of Oahu. Add to that the fact that this is a Hurly episode and you’re almost guaranteed a good time. But don’t take that for granted, those who have seen tonight’s LOST ‘Tricia Tanaka is Dead’ say it would be a huge mistake to consider this episode ‘Mythology Lite’. For more of what to keep your eye on in tonight’s LOST… follow me. (SPOILER WARNING.)
As always, there are two stories in tonight’s LOST, one in the past, and one in the ‘present’ (at least as far as our LOSTaways are concerned.) Both converge on a common theme that, if we are watchful enough, will enlighten us both to sinew of our character in focus – in this case Hurley – and perhaps, just maybe, give us some overtly resonating theme that deconstructs into a parable of why things are the way they are for those hapless survivors. Just what does this island want from them?
The story of the past, is forked. In most regards it is about Hurley and his paranoia over the numbers curse. It is also about his estranged father (played by Cheech Marin) who has returned after seventeen years, hot on the heels of Hurley’s big win.
The story of the present also forks, although not so sharply. On one side, you have Hurley’s discovery of a van in the middle of the jungle. That’s right, a van. If you’re guessing there is a Dharma logo on it somewhere, pat yourself on the back. Hurley somehow feels this van will bring hope to the moping beach folks. What does give them hope is the return of Sawyer and Kate.
The common theme between these two stories is cars. But underlying these stories is a beautifully nuanced denouement that will have huge implications in next weeks episode, “Enter 77”. Want to know what that theme is? Join me tomorrow for an in-depth analysis!
