Matthew Fox seems like a smart guy. Interviews, public appearances, they all point to a humble dude who isn't overly concerned with becoming a massive movie star, as most actors in his situation likely would be. As such, since rocketing to tropospheric
Lost-fame Fox has decided to appear in supporting roles. His assistant coach role in
We Are Marshall was enjoyable, nothing special, but the one that stands out for me was his cameo in
Smokin' Aces as a barely recognizable hotel security employee. Though it was a cameo, it showed Fox was willing to experiment, maybe do something that fans wouldn't expect. This trend continues with his next film. Coming up in May 2008, Fox will be appearing in the film adaptation of
Speed Racer as the mysterious Racer X.
Speed Racer is being brought to the big screen by The Wachowskis Brothers (technically, they are now brother/sister, but that's a whole other story), the film geniuses who brought us
The Matrix and
V for Vendetta. The film will be released next May, but yesterday fans got their first look at the film, with both pictures and a trailer released to the masses. There wasn't too much footage of Matthew Fox in the trailer (which makes sense – he's supposed to be mysterious, after all), but what footage there was is interesting. Here's the trailer, in it's less than glorious YouTube form:
Reactions to this trailer have been decidedly mixed. It's definitely a bit cheesy, but the Wachowskis are smart guys, and I think they're going for a very distinct visual style with Speed Racer. It looks like they're trying to make a live action Anime film. The film also stars Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild, Alpha Dog), Christina Ricci, John Goodman and Susan Sarandon.
This is easily the boldest move Matthew Fox has made regarding his career since he started on Lost. Speed Racer has massive potential but, given the look of this trailer, the possibility for a huge bust is there as well.
What do you think of the Speed Racer trailer?
