Three of “New York’s most powerful women” have simply fallen prey to the hands of network executives.  It was recently announced that Lipstick Jungle was canceled by NBC, leaving fans to wonder what’s going to happen tonight.  After attracting a modest amount of viewers in its past seasons, the series had little chance to survive.  However, it seems as though NBC isn’t ready to let go of it that quickly.  It has been confirmed that the remaining episodes of the season will indeed be aired.  The only problem is that the series’ storylines won’t be wrapped up that cleanly, as it won’t be returning for season 3.

Based on the book by Sex and the City‘s Candace Bushnell, Lipstick Jungle follows the exploits of three friends who have been dominant forces in their areas of expertise.  The series debuted as a midseason replacement show last February, and was originally part of NBC’s Thursday line-up.  Lipstick Jungle starred Brooke Shields, Kim Raver and Lindsay Price, but this wasn’t enough to pull up ratings.

The series attracted about 7.54 million viewers, and achieved a 2.9/8 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic.  Viewership declined as the series progressed, and the writer’s strike caused even more problems for the show’s first run.  A desperate NBC decided to give Lipstick Jungle another shot, renewing the series for another 13 episodes in the hope that the numbers would at least improve.

Even though the network promoted it the best it could, Jungle received lower ratings for its second season.  It averaged a mere five million viewers on its Wednesday night slot, causing NBC to schedule it on Fridays.  In effect, the series obtained a rather discouraging 3.26 million viewers.

All of this amounted to NBC pulling the plug on the future of Lipstick Jungle.  Just last week, the series’ writers already cleaned out their offices.  But there’s no doubt that in the following month, the network is going to exhaust the remaining episodes for the year.  There’s also been word that come January, the slot that Jungle has been occupying will be taken by Friday Night Lights.

Despite the news, tonight’s Lipstick Jungle will focus on betrayal, when Wendy (Brooke Shields) sees Nico (Kim Raver) and Griffin enjoying their lunch together.  But the two will have to put their feelings aside to comfort a very upset Victory (Lindsay Price).

Don’t forget to catch Lipstick Jungle‘s “Chapter Fifteen: Sisterhood of the Traveling Prada” tonight on NBC at 10pm, before the series is completely off the air.
