Previously on Lipstick Jungle: Nico (Kim Raver) decided to end things with Kirby after her husband Charles suffered a heart attack. Wendy (Brooke Shields) secretly submitted some of her husband Shane's (Paul Blackthorne) music to the director of a new film, causing some friction between the two. Victory (Lindsay Price) reconsiders after breaking up with Joe (Andrew McCarthy), but he may have already moved on.
Based on a novel by
Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell,
Lipstick Jungle returns for a second season on NBC this fall. Last year,
Lipstick Jungle competed with and defeated
Cashmere Mafia in the race to become the next dramedy about successful female friends in New York City. (
Jungle got a second season, while
Mafia sleeps with the fishes.)
Lipstick Jungle chronicles the lives of three powerful women in New York. Wendy Healy (Brooke Shields) is the head of a large movie studio who struggles to balance her demanding professional life with being a good mother and wife. Nico (Kim Raver) is the editor-in-chief of a
Vanity Fair-like magazine with aspirations of becoming the CEO. She is also in the midst of an affair with a 25-year-old photographer, even though – or perhaps, because – she has been married to her husband for almost 20 years. Finally, Victory Ford (Lindsay Price) is the free-spirited designer who knows only two well that in the fashion world, one day you can be in and the next day, you're out. Along with getting her career back on track, Victory must also navigate a complicated love life with her billionaire boyfriend, Joe Bennett (Andrew McCarthy).
What makes
Lipstick Jungle appealing is that the characters are written to be very relatable. Not all of us happen to run major motion picture studios, but we've all had to figure out how to strike the right balance between spending time with our loved ones and getting ahead in our careers. Likewise, the impulse to stray in a marriage is a common one, and dating is often just plain complicated, even if you're not dating a billionaire. Unlike the
Sex and the City foursome, these three women are actually strong, modern women, and not simpering caricatures.
Lipstick Jungle moves to Wednesday nights this fall.
