Nate Ford (Timothy Hutton) - the central character on TNT's Leverage and described as the textbook flawed cable hero - is on a crossroads as the drama series kicks off its sophomore season tonight at 9pm.
Leverage, which revolves around a bitter and vengeful modern-day Robin Hood is reportedly a victim of uncertainty of whether or not Leverage would be renewed or not. Early February this year, however, TNT announced that it has renewed the show for a second, 15-episode season, and co-creator John Rogers admits to USA Today that they may have ended up "writing ourselves into a corner" in an effort to provide a "satisfying ending" to the series in the event of a non-renewal.
That being said, the season 2 premiere of the TNT drama is not without a tinge of relevance. On "The Beantown Bailout Job," Nate Ford reluctantly reassembles the team to pit the local Irish mob against a banker who is gaming a government bailout. If they survive, Nate has to deal with four thieves who've decided he needs them in his life, whether he likes it or not.
"The biggest change for Nate is the drinking: He quit the bottle," says Hutton, 48, adding that the new season will continue to show how "incredibly vindictive" he can get against people who are "awful" and how he takes great pleasure in humiliating bad guys.
"He's moved on and has his life together. But he's replaced certain vices with others and become even more of a control freak," he said.
Other than Hutton,
Leverage also stars Gina Bellman as art theft specialist Sophie Devereaux, Christian Kane as martial artist Eliot Spencer, Beth Riesgraf as explosives expert Parker, and Aldis Hodge as cyber hacker and gadget guy Alec Hardison.
