Kid Nation: A Parent's Perspective, Episode 12

Alex and Jared, Kid NationIt is clear that when casting Kid Nation, producers were looking for some very specific children. They, of course, were looking for the antagonists like Taylor and Greg who were going to create drama and buzz. They wanted the creative types, like Morgan and Kennedy. They looked for hard workers because there was actually WORK to be done in Bonanza City. Luckily, they had lots of them in kids like Hunter and Sophia. Then, there were the intellectuals like Jared and Alex. Combine those personality types and it makes for a good season of Kid Nation, which wraps up next week.

There were some real highlights in the episode that aired last night. Sophia was asked to step up and watch over the town when the council went off on a journey, thanks to the journal. While the council was away, I was worried that Sophia would let the power go to her head. Who knew she'd be the best leader to date, keeping the town organized and civilized? In fact, it seemed that without Blaine, Greg, and DK, the town flourished. They treated each other well and won their reward. Who needs a council anyway? Have they really served their purpose this season?

It's no secret that Zach is my favorite kid of the season. I really wish he had won the gold star this week because he was a good council leader and a good member of Bonanza City when he was voted out. He treats people well, he stepped up numerous times to help with Taylor, and he's been a good example to others. I'm praying that one of those giant gold stars next week had his name on it. I love that a 10-year-old had the courage to stand up to teenage Greg, who laughed at him when he got emotional talking about the gold star. I've tried to defend Greg a few times throughout the season but, at the end of the day, I can't anymore.

Jared and Alex not only provided us with lots of laughs on last night's episode, but also lots of things to think about. Alex seems to be the more logical one, talking about futures (as it pertains to investments) and paradoxes. Jared, on the other hand, spoke of inventing a device that could teleport anyone anywhere in the universe. Greg felt that by giving Jared the gold star, maybe Jared would go to college and someday, invent that teleportation device. I got news for everybody: it ain't happening.

While some people found the monument pointless, I kind of wish that the kids has chosen it. I thought it would be nice to have their place solidified in history. Then again, is Bonanza City going to be a tourist attraction? Who's going to see that monument anyway? Eh, I guess I'd have taken that balloon ride, too.

Do you think the Town Council is necessary?
Yes, the kids need a group to lead them.
No, they haven't really served their purpose.
