Kid Nation: A Parent's Perspective, Episode 6

On last night's episode of Kid Nation, the kids were faced with the tough task of cleaning up Bonanza City.  The town council voted who would be helping with the garbage and not everyone was happy to hear their name called.  The town finally got some nutritious foods and ganged up on a common enemy.  A very deserving person won the gold star after moving an entire town.

Does anyone notice how there is a core group of kids that are featured consistently and then each week, depending on the issue, a new kid is introduced to the audience?  When the issue was nobody working, we met Sophia.  When the issue was religion, we met Morgan.  When the issue was elections, we met Guylan.  This week, when the town falls apart, DK stepped up to make a change.

DK is 14 years old and hails from Chicago, IL.  He has six brothers and sisters which may explain his ability to put himself in charge of others.  He worked hard throughout the episode and made sure that Bonanza City was cleaned up.  When Taylor and Leila refused to help, he tried to talk to them.  He was unsuccessful at that (which we'll get to in a minute) and the rest of the town went crazy on the girls.  At the town council meeting, DK was reduced to tears after he couldn't stop everyone from screaming at Taylor.  He tried to leave but the kids of Bonanza City came together to convince him to stay and there was hardly a dry eye in the room.  His parents should be proud, seeing what an impact one person can make.  He's the most deserving winner of the gold star to date and surely will put it to good use!

Now, it's on to the matter of Taylor and Leila.  If I were their parents, I'd be embarrassed for the way they are behaving.  Though it's clear that Leila follows the beauty queen's every move, she is also old enough to choose right from wrong.  Taylor was downright incorrigible.  I know I'm getting old when I start throwing the word incorrigible into my daily sentences but considering it means "unruly and uncontrollable", it's the perfect word for Taylor.  Week after week, I watch, wondering what she's doing there.  She seems to be the only one there for the wrong reasons.  Even Leila helped a LITTLE.  If Taylor or her parents put her on tv to get her some exposure, then I wish producers saw through that.  There's no denying she's good television but man, I don't know that I could survive 40 days with her screaming and hollering!

The kids FINALLY got some nutrition, winning fruits and vegetables for the town.  It only took producers 17 days to give it to them!  We're at the halfway point and I suppose my question is: what constitutes a working town?  It was set up before they got there and all they ever do is scream at each other to shut up when they don't get their way.  Is a working town equivalent to 40 kids not killing each other without any adults around?  Let's hope DK caused these kids to open their eyes and make a change.  If the town had 40 DKs, imagine the possibilities!
