BuddyTV is looking at the 17 new shows the major networks will premiere this Fall to see which ones are worth getting excited about and which ones we have low expectations for.
Show Description: Kath and Kim is an adaptation of a hugely successful Australian comedy. Kim has recently separated from her husband and decides to move back in with her mother, Kath, a 40-something divorcee. Kim is a coddled little princess and expects to be treated as such, but when she moves back in she finds that her mother has different ideas.
When: Thursdays at 9:30pm on NBC
Cast: Molly Shannon, Selma Blair, John Michael Higgins, Mikey Day
Anticipation: I'm cautiously optimistic about this new half-hour comedy. Molly Shannon has never quite captured the success she had as a cast member on
Saturday Night Live and Selma Blair has been off of our radar for some time now. Both actresses are talented so it seems the success of the show lies more in the hands of the writers. NBC has faith, giving it a time slot on Thursday nights, its prime night for comedies. Let's hope the show keeps viewers from reaching for their remotes when the clock hits 9:30.
Minority Opinion by John Kubicek: I don't find Molly Shannon funny. At all. For that reason alone, I have no interest in this sitcom. She is loud, obnoxious, and everything she does is the same broad, wacky, crazy character. I still have no idea how anyone thought her work on
Saturday Night Live was funny. Mary Katherine Gallagher was the most appallingly stupid and annoying piece of “comedy” I've ever seen. I realize comedy is subjective, but even then I don't understand how anyone can see the appeal of Shannon's brand of comedy.
Similar Shows: There have been many shows that feature the relationship of a single mother and her daughter. From
Grace Under Fire to
Reba to
Gilmore Girls to
Desperate Housewives, it's certainly a story often told. It doesn't seem to be enough to carry an entire show but with a strong supporting cast full of storylines, this show could make it.
