Jericho 1.20 "One If By Land" Recap
Jericho 1.20 "One If By Land" Recap
The previouslies show the fake Marines who came to Jericho, and the windmill deal. What, no flashback of “Heather’s dead”? I guess that means they won’t be talking about that much.

Some New Bern men are demanding to be let in at the salt mine – it’s Dale and Skyler’s deal that Grey’s still not accepting. Skyler doesn’t want trouble, but Dale wants his deal. Shots are fired all around.

The Morse code says “We Pledge.” I don’t quite get it.

Sheriff-Mayor Constantino demands that Jake tell him Hawkins’ identity & location, and Jake refuses, and is put back in his cell. Eric is all gloomy and depressed and doesn’t care about escaping.

In Jericho, the wounded from both sides are brought to the Med Center, where Gail is trying to organize everything. Mary shows up and is no help; a woman named Mrs Carmichael, whose husband was injured, yells at Skyler (who’s slightly injured) and says things about her father.

Russell wants to go back to New Bern with news that the salt deal is on, (not that it is,) and hints obliquely about the impending doom coming from the direction of his town. He tells Johnston about Eric being missing, and Jake going after him. Johnston heads out to New Bern with Russell, after a tense conversation with Gail ending with hugs.

Hawkins arrives at Ted’s cabin.

In New Bern, Maggie Mullen the Ex-Fake Marine is put into the jail cell, where she tells Jake that she and her pals split up. She tries to persuade Jake to give her information that she can use to get out, so she can get help to break them out. (I am very suspicious of her motives.) The cops take Eric away to torture him some more. Jake apparently gives in, as we next see Maggie telling Perkins about Hawkins being at Ted’s cabin. She claims that Constantino said she could go along, and be released when they find him. Wait, when did she make that deal? Anyway, they take her along, saying “if he’s not there, kill her.”

Johnston and Russell get to New Bern and meet with Constantino. They tell him about the trouble at the mine, and after Constantino finishes complaining once again about how Jericho let Ravenwood attack them, he tells them about Jake and Eric both “sabotaging” the factory, and that they’re in jail. Johnston is Very Angry.

The cops and Maggie arrive at Ted’s cabin. Each cop goes into the cabin and doesn’t come out; they’re not too bright, are they? Hawkins appears, and seems ready to shoot Maggie, but Jake gave her a safe word, “Columbus.” Maggie wants in on the plan to get the Green boys out of jail, and says she has an “in” with Constantino.

Eric was tortured, but says he didn’t tell them anything. Jake wonders why they’re still trying if Maggie already gave up Hawkins, but Eric says they just wanted to know about Jericho’s defences. That torture must’ve included electroshock therapy, as Eric’s cheered up quite a bit and says they’re “not going to die in here.”

Emily visits Gail, and tells her that Mary’s trying hard. Gail apologizes for her crankiness; she misses April, in case we’ve forgotten. Emily says that Gail and Mary have a lot in common – they’re both tough, hard-headed broads.

Skyler is also cranky. Not about her ankle injury, but about the Carmichaels disrespecting her father, who she says was a “good man.” Dale says maybe he was, but people were nice to him because he had a lot of power.

Hawkins, Ted, and Maggie plot to get Jake and Eric out. Ted is clearly afraid of having to shoot anyone. Ted and Maggie reminisce about the old peaceful days, but Hawkins, who probably finds this action more normal than anything, says he “can’t remember back that far.”

Johnston tells Russell he’s welcome in Jericho; Russell says he has a family in New Bern, so he’ll be staying, but gives Johnston some info about how to get out of town without going through the barricades. Constantino changes his mind about letting Johnston see the boys, saying he needs his men back first, and has Johnston escorted out of town.

Hawkins is at the factory, and manages to make off with a truck full of mortars by shooting the driver and taking his place. Maggie arrives back at town hall, demanding to see Constantino, and tells the truth about the plan, but isn’t believed. Apparently she turned on her friends when she arrived in town, so she’s got a reputation as untrustworthy. That’s her “in” with Constantino? Hmm. Hawkins blows up his truck, and confusion breaks out. Johnston uses the distraction, too, also heading for town hall.

Ted freaks out about shooting anyone, and runs off; Hawkins takes out snipers and guards on his own, just as Jake and Eric are brought outside. Maggie also comes out, and is shot. Johnston arrives too, and suddenly everyone has a gun and is able to get to the truck, including Maggie, and they peel out of there, heading for Russell’s back road out of town.

Back in Jericho, Mrs Carmichael tries to buy some meat at the store for her hurt husband, but Dale says the price has gone up. Skyler seems torn, but gives it to her for the usual price anyway, pointedly saying “My father was a good man.” Mrs Carmichael agrees politely and thanks her.

Gail arrives at Mary’s, which is empty, because they’re out of vodka since Mary’s mostly just making alcohol for the clinic these days. They chat a bit, and agree to keep in touch if either hears about any of the missing Green men.

Just outside of New Bern, the truck is out of gas, so Hawkins and the Greens hide it in the bushes. Hawkins is hurt too, but apparently has real whiskey with him. They set out on foot, carrying Maggie, for the twelve-mile walk back to Jericho.

Only two episodes left – next week is part one of a two-part season finale.
