Being the only regular cast member above 50 in FX's
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia doesn't bother veteran actor
Danny DeVito. In fact, the 62-year-old star only has good things to say about his much younger male co-stars, who incidentally co-write the show.
"These guys are so talented," DeVito, who plays Frank Reynolds on the series, said of
Rob McElhenney (Mac),
Glenn Howerton (Dennis) and
Charlie Day (Charlie). "They built the box. This is a whole other kind of comedy, and for me, it's like really refreshing and great. And I always say that this year, we started to take the lid off the box. So we're... getting up to speed," he said.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a comedy series that revolves around four friends living in Philadelphia. Much of the show's hilarity stems from the humorous way in which highly sensitive topics like abortion, sexism, gun control, racism, religion, transsexuality and gay rights are depicted. Included in the male- dominated cast is actress
Kaitlin Olson, who plays Dennis' sister, Deb.
In addition to starring and writing the series, McElhenney, Day and Howerton also serve as producers and showrunners on the show. The three also often oversee casting and editing.
Danny DeVito, whose credits include the successful sitcom
Taxi, recognizes the heavy workload his three co-stars undertake for the show.
"It's an amazing amount of work, but they're doing it,” Danny DeVito said. “It's not like you know, you've got Danny and Judd [Hirsch] and Marilu [Henner] and Tony [Danza] and Christopher Lloyd and then you've got Jim Brooks and Ed Weinberger and Stan Daniels and Dave Davis running the show," the way they did on
Taxi.
DeVito started appearing on
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia during the second season. Although most of the series is filmed in Los Angeles, the cast and crew have gone to Philadelphia to shoot a number of scenes. DeVito described his first visit with the show as “a glorious experience.”
"You can't even begin to say how Philly treated us, it was so great. They just opened up the city for us," he said at an FX cocktail party this past summer. "Rob and I went down and rang the bell for the Stock Exchange. We did all kinds of stuff. Every restaurant, every place you went to, people would just show their enthusiasm for the show.”
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is currently on its third season on FX and airs Thursday nights at 10pm.
