Quentin Tarantino’s latest project, the war period film
Inglourious Basterds, already boasts of a huge cast before it began production last month. It seems the announcements aren’t going to end just yet, as two more actors have been tasked to fill roles in the feature.
First up is
Samuel L. Jackson, who is everywhere as we speak. He
just took a major role in the pending remake of the 1980s cult classing
The Last Dragon. However, the casting is no surprise, as he’s worked with Tarantino in several of his films—
Pulp Fiction,
Jackie Brown and
Kill Bill. However, don’t expect to see much of him in this film; his main task is to provide occasional narration to the events unfolding on the screen.
Also in the cast is Chinese actress Maggie Cheung, who will appear as Madame Mimieux, the French owner of a cinema that proves vital to the plot. She may be unknown to most American audiences, but she’s an acclaimed film star both in Hong Kong and elsewhere around the world. Viewers may know her for her roles in Wong Kar-Wai’s films
In the Mood for Love and
2046. She is also the first Asian actress to win a prize at the Cannes Film Festival, earning the Best Actress plum in 2004 for the French film
Clean.
Production for
Inglourious Basterds is well underway, and provided everything goes well—unlike the many false starts the crew went through—we might have a first glimpse of the film in next year’s Cannes Film Festival.
