While some people deem VH1's
I Love New York as a reality show with shallow content and vulgar participants, one contestant aspires to steer the show away from the public's negative perception. David Otunga, who is popularly known as
Punk, reveals why someone of his caliber would subject himself to be part of such a controversial program.
Punk, one of the distinct contestants vying for the heart of
Tiffany “New York” Pollard on the second season of
I Love New York, is an articulate and Harvard educated lawyer who hails from Elgin, Illinois. Unlike other participants, he considers himself religious and is actually one of the five men chosen by
Sister Patterson for her daughter New York.
According to Punk, he had a crush on New York since she first saw her on the reality dating show,
Flavor of Love, where she was one of the contestants competing for
Flavor Flav's attention. When the second season of
I Love New York started casting, his niece sent his profile to the casting directors. He eventually got a call for an audition and the rest is history.
When asked why he decided to join the show, Punk said, “I wanted to reach out as a role model and to show it is cool to be a professional. You don't have to be a rapper or an actor.”
Although Punk usually goes for the more reserved type of women, he is ready to make an exception for New York, whom he finds confident and outgoing. In fact, he even reveals that he genuinely has feelings for her.
“I really do have love for New York,” he said.
For Punk, his exposure on
I Love New York has done a lot of positive things for his career. The show not only enabled him to quit working at the law firm he was previously serving but he was also able to pursue one of his dreams, which is to open his own law practice.
“I am able to make money from appearances and public/motivational speaking, which allows me to volunteer my legal services to the people who need it in my community. While I am getting my law practice off the ground, I am working at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition with the Rev. Jesse Jackson. I volunteer my legal services in their legal clinic every week,” he revealed.
So far, there are six guys remaining fighting for New York's love. Find out who will be eliminated next on
I Love New York on Monday at 9/8c on VH1.
