Patrick "
Tango" Hunter, from season 1 of
I Love New York, knows the criticism leveled at shows like that one. He outlines it on his blog, “‘The idiocy,' ‘The Modern day MINSTREL show,' ‘A mockery of 400 years of progress.'”
Tango has previously talked about his feelings that - despite the controversial nature of a show like
I Love New York - he didn't feel that he was contributing to any negative image by appearing on it. He's recently elaborated on his feelings on his Myspace blog.
Tango writes, “I believe I set a standard on reality TV that has never been done before. Real, fake or scripted.... at no point did I compromise my dignity, my self respect or my integrity to be on that program. I was far from perfect and had my moments. But I believe I gave reality TV viewers something they've never seen before. More importantly, I believe I gave the ‘Minority viewer' someone they could both respect and relate to. I'm sorry, but I felt the only way to change things were from the inside out. It was Hell, but it was a small sacrifice to be made in order to give ‘Us' a voice... A voice doesn't mind saying Hell No.”
He feels that viewers have a responsibility as well to ask for more from the media and to support the positive representations that already exist. He writes that people “want to see [Tango] with his own show....Well Tan won't be anything less than ‘the exception,' ‘the difference' because ‘my people' Deserve more. At the same time...‘my people' have to want the exception... They have to want the difference. The Tango's, the Onix's, the Mo'Nique's & the Dr. Ian Smith's are out there, so support them.
They [the networks] don't pay your Cable bill ....Yet we let them control what we see..?"
Tango hasn't posted a new blog entry since the premiere of I Love New York season 2, so his thoughts and feelings on that crop of gentlemen to attempt to woo New York, and how they are presenting themselves on the show, is not yet known.
