Poor Richard Matheson. His novel
I Am Legend has been adapted for the screen three different times, and Hollywood still hasn't done it justice. They're always doing things like changing the title, removing the vampires or giving it an unnecessary happy ending. Now comes word from
Variety that Warner Bros is planning a prequel to Will Smith's version of the tale, which is no surprise since the first film grossed $584 million worldwide.
Smith and director Francis Lawrence will both be returning for the project, with D.B. Weiss writing a script based on an outline hatched by Smith, Lawrence, and producers Akiva Goldsman and James Lassiter. According to
Variety, "the prequel will chronicle the final days of humanity in New York before a man-made virus caused a plague that left Smith's character the lone survivor among a mutated mob in the city."
I can't say I'm excited about this news, but I at least hope the filmmakers take the time to make the CGI creatures more believable this time around.
