'How I Met Your Mother' Season 7 Preview Guide: A Wedding, a Baby and a Mother (Or Maybe Not)
Last season on How I Met Your Mother, we did not meet the mother. Yet. We did meet Zoey, though, who we thought could be the mother. We said goodbye to Marshall's dad, but we said hello to Barney's dad. We said hello to to Robin Sparkles (again). Lily said hello to motherhood, while Barney said hello to married life -- but to who, exactly, we don't quite know.

What to Expect in How I Met Your Mother Season 7

The answer to that question? A lot. With HIMYM seemingly headed for the home stretch -- co-creator Craig Thomas has hinted that the season after How I Met Your Mother season 7 could be the show's last -- there are a lot of loose ends to be tied up. And yet it's not looking that way, exactly.

Two new major characters will be introduced in How I Met Your Mother season 7. Martin Short joins the show as Marshall's new superstar boss, taking over from Dave Foley (who now joins another CBS comedy, How To Be A Gentleman). Also, Kal Penn -- last seen on House and the halls of the White House -- joins the comedy as Kevin, Robin's therapist-slash-love-interest.

So what about the gang? Series creators Carter Bays describes How I Met Your Mother season 7 as one about "birth," and not only because Lily's pregnant (and, by season's end, will give birth). There's Barney getting married, and while we won't find out who he ties the knot with early in the season, we'll get to see him deal with his feelings for Nora, and Robin's feelings for him. (This is where the "dance number" Neil Patrick Harris hinted on So You Think You Can Dance comes in.) And then there's Ted, who finds himself in a bit of a pickle: he wants to settle down, and yet circumstances tell him not to.

One more thing to watch out for in How I Met Your Mother season 7: a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo from Conan O'Brien. He won a charity auction for a walk-on role, and despite the writers offering to give him a few lines, he insisted on doing what Thomas calls a "Where's Waldo" type role. I bet he's easy to spot -- his hair is so ... red!
