Babies, dead ringers, and the never ending battle of career versus romance--
How I Met Your Mother's fifth season finale taps on all these things and more though surprisingly, nothing in the realm of the mother of Ted's children. I'm not complaining though because while the season ender doesn't really leave any big cliffhangers, it manages to be light, funny and entertaining, which reminds me of why this comedy series got me hooked in the first place.
Finale Photos: "Doppelgangers"As the title "Doppelgangers" connotes, the final episode of the season is all about finding Barney's look-alike. We've seen everyone's dead ringer (Lesbian Robin, Mustache Marshall, Stripper Lily and Mexican Wrestler Ted) and now it's time to see Barney's. For Lily and Marshall, though, seeing Barney's doppelganger is a sign from the universe that they should start trying to make a baby.
In the world of
How I Met Your Mother, it's hard to distinguish Barney's doppelganger from the real Barney, who's become a master of disguise as he tries to impersonate a cab driver and an Estonian street performer in attempt to bang more chicks. The latter disguise, however, is just a sweet little plot to convince Marshall and Lily that he's finally onboard with their plan to create a family regardless of his initial dismay and hesitation.
Which How I Met Your Mother Character Are You?Unfortunately, we don't get to see Barney's doppelganger but we don't really have to because in Lily's eyes, she's already seen Barney's doppelganger in the form of a hotdog vendor who is nowhere close to Barney's appearance. Future Ted explains it best when he says "you can ask the universe anything but in the end we only see what we want to see when we're ready to see it." On that note, Lily and Marshall officially decide to make a baby.
Babies and doppelgangers aside, the final episode of
How I Met Your Mother also puts the final nail in the coffin on the Robin-Don relationship while making fun of Ted's blonde ambition, which later kept Robin and Ted from doing something they both would have regretted.
Robin finally chooses love when she gets the career opportunity of a lifetime in Chicago only to find out that Don has chosen the very same offer she turned down to be with him. But leave it to Ted to erase Robin's sorrows. He gives a nice and inspiring speech about how "we've become our own doppelgangers," which results in an almost-kiss between Ted and Robin, who couldn't help but laugh so hard thanks to Ted's blonde hair.
