Since the beginning of
How I Met Your Mother, Barney Stinson (
Neil Patrick Harris) has always been depicted as a womanizer who resolves to help Ted Mosby (
Josh Radnor) find a woman. But by the end of the third season, he has found himself in the most unusual situation as he falls for Ted's former love interest Robin Scherbatsky (
Cobie Smulders).
Although it took almost three years before Barney and Robin finally went beyond the borders of their friendship by kissing and eventually sleeping together, producers of
How I Met Your Mother have been eyeing the chemistry between the two characters since the beginning of the sitcom.

I think they should have a secret 'chandler & monica' style affair!

I love both of them seperately but Im not fond of them together. I really liked her with Ted. But we'll see.
“We knew we had that bill in wall and we could spend it whenever we want it. And they're so great together. They've been great together since the first season, since they went out and played laser tag. We sort of knew there's a connection there. That's something…we'll be able to do something with that at some point. And now It felt like that right time to start down that path,” executive producer Carter Bays told
TV Guide.
Neil Patrick Harris seems to agree given that he has been pondering on the hookup for quite some time now, even though this is something that is quite a stretch for his playboy character.
“I've been angling that for awhile. I think the world of Cobie Smulders. I think she's super talented and gorgeous on the show. I thought it was an interesting dynamic to have Barney and Robin hookup,” Neil Patrick Harris told
TV Guide.
Just like Harris, Smulders is enjoying working with their new love angle on the show. But while fans are expecting more action between their two characters, this just might not happen that easily since Robin doesn't see eye to eye with Barney, who appears to want something more than just friendship.
“I think she sees it as a pretty big mistake,” Smulders told
TV Guide.
Fans will just have to stay tuned to find out what's next for Robin and Barney.
