Gregory House has faced down many worthy adversaries in his time. Chi McBride's Edward Vogler failed to get him fired. David Morse's Michael Tritter failed to get him arrested. Anne Dudek's dead Amber failed to get him (permanently) crazy. But none of these opponents had the clout of Candice Bergen. And none of them were playing his girlfriend's mom.
As announced by Entertainment Weekly, Candice Bergen has taken a recurring role as Lisa Cuddy's mother. This five-time Emmy winner and comedic icon feels like such a perfect choice as a House-foil that it's scary. House himself should definitely be scared.
Bergen, best known for her stints as on
Murphy Brown and
Boston Legal (plus a whole bunch of movies and guest-starring parts), has been woefully missing from television over the past two years. Her
House return comes in November, when Bergen will appear as Ma Cuddy for the first of several episodes.
What can we expect when TV titans meet? Safe bet that Bergen's character will not approve of House. After all, he's House. No mother in her right mind would approve of such a relationship. We can only hope that her opposition is of the most aggressive nature. And if she can't get the better of the genius doctor in his area of weakness (you know, human emotions), then no one can.
Candice Bergen is only the most prominent of the many guest stars already announced for
House's upcoming season.
Joan of Arcadia's Amber Tamblyn will appear for several episodes as a med student. Other guests we can expect to see include Amy Irving (
Alias), Dylan Baker (
The Good Wife), Jennifer Grey (
Dirty Dancing and now
Dancing with the Stars) and Matthew Lillard (
Scooby Doo).
