It has been noted that romantic relationships may just be something that the medical dramedy
House is not too keen on exploring. Sure, there are always rumors about Dr. House (
Hugh Laurie) hooking up or maybe even forming something romantic with, say, Dr. Wilson (
Robert Sean Leonard) and Cuddy (
Lisa Edelstein), but all these have been for naught so far. Of course, there's Cameron (Jennifer Morison) and Chase (
Jesse Spencer), who used to be a true-to-life couple before but no longer are, off and onscreen.
Some critics have pointed out that
House specifically benefits from this absence of sex altogether, and at the same time sticking to its intriguing disease per week, which House will ultimately be right about (or not). Some say the utter lack of romantic drama is killing the show and the purely medical aspect of it is getting old. This is probably true since House has such an intriguing personality that it would similarly be intriguing how he would act as part of a romantic pair.
According to some initial spoilers, the “most unhealthy, obsessive love affair” between House and Wilson is bound to be tested by the fact that House was instrumental in Wilson's girlfriend's death, yet early episodes are, at best, “inconclusive.”
On the other hand,
House creators have suggested that the Cuddy-House angle will be “explored further” this season. If we'd backtrack, in a prior interview, Edelstein admitted that while she does think that House is attracted to her character, the weirdo that he is, House is simply not capable of a conventional love affair like most people are.
“I'm not sure House is capable of love the way other people are. I think he's so disconnected to himself in that way that it would be impossible for him to truly be able to connect to somebody else.”
House returns for its fifth season on Tuesday, September 16.
