The 2006 Oscar nominations were announced last week, and the surprises were many. One of the great things about the Academy Awards is how enormously prestigious even a nomination becomes. Doors are opened wide for actors and actresses based upon the award buzz they receive and, especially so, if they end up winning. This being my first year viewing the Oscars from a television perspective, I noticed something:
A bunch of these nominees come from the world of TV. This wasn't a particularly mind-boggling realization; going from TV to film has always been a natural progression. But, this year especially, there were a few nominees whom I'd watched religiously on TV in my younger years. This is why I decided to rank the top ten nominees who'd gotten their start in television.
What is my criteria? Well, mostly, the placement in the rankings are based on my personal favoritism. Unfair, perhaps, but something that was unavoidable. I tried to also rank the nominees based on significance of their TV careers and the quality of their subsequent film careers. I also looked at the longevity of both, and what I perceived to be the future of their film careers.
