When The Vampire Diaries returns this fall for its fifth season, changes will be coming. The days of high school dances are in the past for Elena and Caroline as they head off to Whitmore College.

But, don't worry the dances won't disappear. Jeremy's still in Mystic Falls and will attend a 1950s school dance. He'll also deal with his resurrection by pretending that he faked his death and burned his house down. And, since he's homeless he'll be living and having fun with Damon. While the girls are away, will they guys play?

With Elena and Caroline's move to Whitmore College, new people will enter their lives and they won't all be good. An attractive professor Dr. Wes Maxfield will be stirring up trouble for them according to TV Guide. He'll be played by Australian newcomer Rick Cosnett.

On the positive side, both women will have new male friends to distract them at least for a short time. Caroline will be befriended by Jesse played by Kendrick Sampson. Only Jesse has a bad history with vampires, which could cause a problem for their friendship.

And, even though Elena and Damon are going strong a long distance relationship is never easy. According to E!, Elena will get close to a new guy, Aaron, played by Shaun Sipos (Life Unexpected, Melrose Place). They'll meet and bond over their similar tragic family histories.

And those are only a few of the happenings expected in The Vampire Diaries season 5. Silas left Stefan underwater, Bonnie is dead, Katherine is human and Klaus has released his hold over Tyler.

And, Matt and Rebekah will return from their summer trip abroad, just in time for her to head off to New Orleans to be with her brothers.

With the Original family gone, which of the new characters are you most intrigued by so far? Do you want to see new love interests for Elena and/or Caroline? Or should they just remain friends with these new guys and stick with their current loves?

The Vampire Diaries season 5 premieres on Thursday, October 3 at 8 pm ET on the CW.
