The main cast for the film remake of
The Three Stooges is slowly taking form. Negotiations are currently underway to take
Jim Carrey as Curly, and
Benicio del Toro as Moe. Oscar winner
Sean Penn, on the other hand, is already on board as Larry.
The film, which is based on the early
Stooges shorts rather than being a biopic, is being handled by the Farrelly brothers, who are currently writing a script and are also set to direct it. Shooting is expected to begin early this fall, with a 2010 release date pegged.
The directors have long set their eyes on Del Toro as Moe; the actor’s last comic performance was in the 2000 film
Snatch. Penn hasn’t done a comedy since 1989’s
We’re No Angels. Carrey is reportedly preparing to gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical appearance of his character.
