It's something out of an episode of
The Simpsons. What sounds like a parody of Hollywood action films is, apparently, a reality. Kimbo Slice, the dubiously popular Mixed Martial Arts fighter who gained recognition thanks to street fights he participated in that were posted on YouTube, has signed on for his first film role. That, in and of itself, isn't terribly surprising. Slice is a hot name right now, and his handlers are going to cash in every chance they can before he loses that new car smell. Then it gets funny – he will be co-starring with none other than
Hulk Hogan (whose impressive filmography includes
Suburban Commando and
Mr. Nanny). The film is entitled
Kung Fu U. It is about nerdy Southern Californian kids who are sent to a special institution to learn self-defense. Hogan and Slice will be play instructors at
Kung Fu U. If that all wasn't enough,
Kung Fu U will be filmed in 3D. I don't know whether to jump with joy or reset the doomsday clock to 11:59pm.
The film is being produced Stereo Vision, a company that, according to some stories, is bent on exclusively creating low-cost, high-quality 3D films. There's no reason for you to know about Stereo Vision, but it must be noted that the company's chairman is Doug Schwartz, the evil genius who created
Baywatch and unleashed it into the world.
Kimbo Slice is not a trained actor (he's a bouncer, or “cooler,” by nature) and this will be his first major film role. In 3D, his imposing presence will only be enhanced, and he'll probably scare the bejeezus out of small children nationwide. Hulk Hogan, who has recently been on TV in the VH-1 series
Hogan Knows Best, has a plethora of acting work in his past. Despite family issues over the year (wife divorced, son in jail, daughter singing horribly), Hulk has kept busy. He's the co-host of
American Gladiators, has a celebrity wrestling show in the works, and now his first film work in a few years with
Kung Fu U.
Kung Fu U is a great title. It'll either be a silly and wonderful piece of camp, or a horrendous affront to mankind. There is no in between.
