A few weeks ago, it was just a rumor. With production for
New Moon, the sequel to the big movie hit
Twilight, already under way, there have been many questions as to who could be playing one of the new characters. By now you’ve probably heard that
Vanessa Hudgens—she of
High School Musical and leaked nude photos fame—is apparently in the running for one of those roles: Leah Clearwater, the cynical and heartbroken werewolf who’s part of Jacob Black’s pack.
But, apparently, Hudgens has taken the next step and has actually auditioned for the role. Ashley Greene, who played Alice Cullen in
Twilight, confirmed that the 20-year-old has indeed taken the next step into a possible role on
New Moon, which is being fast tracked for a November release. “I think she’d be great,” the actress told MTV News during one of the after parties at the end of Sunday’s Golden Globes.
Of course, this doesn’t mean Hudgens already has the part—there’s still so much time before the cameras start rolling, reportedly in March. Part of me, though, is wondering whether it’ll work. Sure, she can hold on her own, having done three successful
HSM projects and holding a captive fan base of her own. However, I’m thinking that her inclusion, if it ever happens, will distract from
New Moon’s vibe.
No, I’ve nothing against anybody, but is it just me, or will she be capable of outstaging both
Robert Pattinson and
Kristen Stewart, who are the stars of the film? Or
Taylor Lautner, who was recently confirmed to reprise the role of new main antagonist (of sorts) Jacob Black? Obviously Hudgens is a bigger star than the three of them—at least for now—and perhaps it’d affect the charm that the
Twilight series has, currently clean from outside celebrity.
If she makes the role, though, another question will come out: would she be able to portray a character who’s aggressive and feisty—a complete departure from
HSM’s Gabriella Montez? Of course, we’ll only know when it really happens.
Do you see Vanessa as Leah Clearwater?
