It's project after project for actor Zac Efron, who's been on fire so far this year.  With successful endeavors like High School Musical and 17 Again, the 21-year-old star's career can only go up.  What better path to take than one offered by American Idol's Simon Cowell?

There have been numerous reports saying that Cowell, also a judge of Britain's Got Talent, is in talks to buy the rights for Saturday Night Fever.  What's more, he's chosen Zac Efron for the role originated by John Travolta.

The cult dance film was released in 1977, and it continues to gain support from many.  Simon Cowell will be heading the remake, hoping to work with producer Robert Stigwood, who owns the rights to the screenplay.

The American Idol personality then made a list of actors he was intending to put on Saturday Night Fever, and Zac Efron immediately came to mind.  Cowell wanted him for the lead role, the Tony Manero that catapulted Travolta to stardom.

Another person Cowell has tapped for the remake is rapper Timbaland, who will be focusing on reworking the classic soundtrack.

"The charm offensive has been in full swing and they made a breakthrough over the last couple of weeks," an insider told the British publication The Sun.

"Robert is keen to get some assurances the original won't be completely butchered," the source added.  "Simon has been drawing up a list of people he wants to get involved.  When that meets Robert's expectations, the contracts will be signed."

This exciting new take on Saturday Night Fever could be the next High School Musical, built for a more mature audience who will be able to truly appreciate it.  With Zac Efron possibly snagging the role, there's no doubt it's going to be a mainstream hit as well.  The Disney star is definitely going places, especially since he's been noted by Simon Cowell.

Can Zac Efron top John Travolta’s 1977 performance?
It’s possible
Can’t wait to see how
