Getting haircuts is no big deal if you're that average Joe walking down the street, but it's a huge change for blockbuster stars like Zac Efron.  The High School Musical actor was recently seen sporting a shaved head, truly snipping away his teenybopper image.

Last Thursday, it was reported that Efron was spotted leaving La Peer Salon in Beverly Hills.  While he didn't really go for an all-out shearing of his locks, the Examiner revealed that he stepped out of the shop without his trademark shaggy 'do.

Earlier this year, the actor was quoted saying he wanted to disguise himself just to avoid the onslaught of paparazzi he encounters.  He and girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens have always been followed around, and he's getting really sick of it.

"To be honest, I can't handle the paparazzi," Zac Efron explained to OK! Magazine.  "They're everywhere.  One of them was in a dumpster trying to take my photo the other day.  It was crazy!"

He went on to plan how he'd stay away from the press, but it was obviously a difficult decision.  "I'd love to take a year off and travel the world under the radar," he continued.  "I would love to do it really low-key.  I wouldn't need to stay in fancy hotels or anything; I just want to explore - but I don't know how I'd do it.  Maybe I'd shave my head to try and go incognito?  Yeah, that's what I'd do."

Still, his new haircut isn't enough for the media to stay away.  With the number of projects Efron has lined up for this year, he'll be quite a presence in the industry.  It's been reported that chopping off his locks was a step towards more serious acting roles, such as the one in his upcoming film The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud.

Preparing for his new part, the actor was seen setting sail at Marina del Rey in Los Angeles.  Shaved head or not, Zac Efron remains to be a determined force in showbiz.
