High School Musical: ABC Plans New Reality Show
Last summer, NBC’s Grease: You’re The One That I Want, was all the rage as America chose a new Danny and Sandy to make their debut on Broadway. Currently, MTV has a show in the works to cast the new Elle Woods in Broadway's Legally Blonde. It’s only fitting that Disney would want to jump on the reality bandwagon as well. This week, Variety announced that Disney is going to pair up with ABC to create a new reality show based on the extremely popular High School Musical series.

The show will run a nationwide talent search and choose a handful of contestants to study at a music conservatory. Each week, participants will be eliminated until only one person is left standing. The judges, the elimination style, and the grand prize remains a mystery but details are expected in the coming weeks. ABC is still in search of a production company and needs to finalize the deal before they can begin with casting.

Though nothing has been solidified, Variety reports that viewers can expect appearances from the movie’s cast members. The show will also feature many High School Musical themed moments. After an episode airs on ABC, it will like rerun on The Disney Channel. The as of yet untitled reality show is looking to debut this summer.

This is not the first time that a reality show has been centered around the High School Musical series. In October of 2007, The Disney Channel premiered High School Musical: The Music In You, a documentary about high school students who put on a stage version of the movie. Directed by the award winning director, Barbara Kopple, the show told the story of two different groups of students from two high schools in Texas. The stage show ran for four days and was seen by over 2800 people.
