In Japan, Hiro (Masi Oka) has fun playing with time while sitting in his new big office as president of his father’s company. Hiro is upset he’s wasting his time making tons of money instead of fulfilling his destiny. Ando (James Kyson Lee) would like the money for himself.
A lawyer delivers Kaito’s video will, which tells Hiro he is now in possession of a dangerous secret that could destroy the world if it falls into the wrong hands. It’s in the safe, and all Hiro has to do is never open it. Naturally, Hiro’s first inclination is to open the safe, because he wants to do something instead of nothing. In the safe is a video, where Kaito yells at his son for disobeying him.
There’s also half of a “Formula” that must never get into the wrong hands. If it does, the only hope is a hero with a purity of blood, known as “the light.” Hiro stares at the odd chemistry symbols on the paper when a flash buzzes past and steals the paper. Hiro stops time and follows the sonic waves to a blonde girl dressed in red with a funky haircut,
She’s a Speedster and can run really fast, which means Hiro doesn’t stop time, he only slows it down. She’s sassy and awesome, posing some rather serious questions like whether time stays frozen in one location if Hiro walks to a different place. Actually, I’d love to know that. Does Hiro’s time freeze have a range of distance? And if so, can people outside that range look in and see frozen people? While Hiro and the audience ponder these questions, the Speedster punches him and runs away, stealing the Formula and my heart.
Ando wants Hiro to go back in time to talk to Kaito about why the Formula is so important, but Hiro has vowed never to go back again because he keeps messing things up. He has no such qualms about going into the future to find out the consequences of not retrieving the Formula.
In the future, Hiro sees himself and Ando arguing on a catwalk where Ando is demanding Hiro hand him the Formula. Hiro refuses, and Ando shoots some pink sparky fireball thing at Hiro, then takes the Formula. Future Ando has powers! Then a huge electrical storm comes by and it would appear that all of Japan is destroyed. Back in the present, Hiro only tells Ando that they need to find the Formula.
