In Newark, NJ, a mother, Mary and son, Luke, return home. They live on the same block as the taxidermist (Sylar’s father). She’s just picked him up from juvie, because he punched another kid, and she’s furious that he seems apathetic and distant about everything. They walk into the house and see a man sitting in a chair in front of their television. The mother grabs a fire poker to protect them, but when she walks up to the man, she finds him bound, gagged and bleeding. Several of his fingers are missing and his hands are stabbed through to the chair. Sylar wants into the room carrying her mail, calling her Mary Campbell. He uses his powers to push her and the son into chairs, and tells them they are going to help him get Agent Simmons (the bleeding man) to talk (about where his father is). The agent asks if Sylar is going to torture him in front of them. Sylar replies, “No. I’m going to torture them in front of you.”

Back at the crash site, Daphne and Ando arrive and see Claire among many soldiers and the burning wreckage. They remember that Hiro can’t be dead because Ando is supposed to kill him in the future. Daphne tells Ando to stay put, and speeds off.

Traci and Peter are able to knock out two soldiers, taking their guns and phones. Peter explains why he’s not using his other powers: now he can only hold on to one at a time. But Peter still wants to take on all the guards and take Nathan down. Traci says she has a better idea, because she thinks the same way as Nathan.

Claire tells Noah how she ended up on the plane, and he scolds her for getting involved in something she doesn’t understand. She says she won’t be his excuse anymore for doing bad things, like chaining up the people they know like animals. He tells her that people with these abilities need to be controlled. She reminds him that she is one of them, and so is Nathan. Nathan walks up and gives Claire her final free pass to return home to a normal life. She scoffs and says she doesn’t know who either of her fathers are anymore.

Noah pulls Nathan aside and tells him that he should put a leash on his hunter. As they’re talking, Daphne runs in and grabs Claire. Nathan tells Noah that “daughter or not, you are running out of favors.” H.R.G. threatens to tell the hunter about Nathan’s ability if Claire gets hurt.

At the crash site, Parkman and Mohinder run up to find see Ando, Daphne and Claire. Daphne and Parkman hug.

Flash forward to Nathan on the phone: “Something brought them together,” he says. “They had this misguided idea that they could stop this thing.”

Back at the crash: soldiers look down at the heroes below and open fire. Daphne is shot several times and falls. Claire takes bullets until Parkman, standing above Daphne’s lifeless body, gets inside the shooter’s head and forces him to turn on his own men. Parkman runs off and Claire stands up. The hunter comes down and handcuffs her.

Back in Newark: Sylar begins his torture session, starting with the mother. He chokes her as he tests the son and begins reading the kid’s mind about the family’s dysfunctional past. He questions whether the son cares at all if the mother dies. Luke breaks free of Sylar’s power and a red blast leaves his hand, knocking over Sylar’s cup. “Small world,” Sylar says to the kid. “We really need to talk.”

At the crash site: The hunter has Claire, and calls it her fault that the plane crashed and his men are dead. He’s about to shoot her in the back of the head when Nathan and Noah come up, and Noah leads her away. He reminds her that she and their family aren’t safe, and he needs her to go home and lead a normal life. He promises to do what he can for the others, and puts her in a car.

Danko (the hunter) asks Nathan how many more casualties it will take before he understands that they need to use force. “How did you think it would go? Did you think they’d lie down and give up, treat us as liberators?” (That language sounds familiar.) Danko reminds Nathan that if the plan goes awry, he can kiss his political career goodbye. He tells Nathan to toss his affection for “these animals.” Nathan corrects him, and calls them people, when he gets a telephone call.

It’s Traci. She offers to give him Peter in exchange for her old life back. He promises to meet her alone at a designated mile marker. He promises no tricks.
