FOX is juggling its schedule on Thursdays and Fridays with the return of Hell's Kitchen, moving freshman drama Rake to Fridays and pushing American Idol back an hour.

The 12th season of Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen will premiere Thursday, March 13 at 8pm. As a result, the American Idol results show will be moved to 9pm.

Rake, the Greg Kinnear freshman legal dramedy, will then move to Fridays at 8pm, taking over for Bones, which moves back to Mondays at 8pm starting March 10.

In addition, FOX's mid-season Christopher Meloni sitcom Surviving Jack will still premiere on Thursday, March 27, though now it will be at 9:30pm, following a half-hour Idol results show.

The main reason for the change seems to be trying to protect American Idol's dwindling ratings. The Top 13 results show barely hit 10 million viewers, well below past seasons. One of the big hurdles is that it's up against The Big Bang Theory, a beast in the ratings. By moving Idol back to 9pm, Idol will have less powerful competition and will be more likely to be the top show in its time slot.

Hell's Kitchen, of course, will be sacrificed against The Big Bang Theory, but it's an established, solid performer that doesn't typically get huge ratings.

The real loser in this shift is Rake, being abandoned on Friday nights. It has been dramatically underperforming on Thursdays (the most recent episode lost about 65 percent of its Idol lead-in). Moving it to Fridays probably means its odds of renewal are slim-to-none.
