Variety has an interesting article this morning discussing a new biography of the late Walt Disney. Walt was an interesting man, an important man, but that's not really what interests me about the article. The writer brings up a few interesting theories about what Walt would approve and disapprove of in the media empire he is responsible for.
The most interesting question presented is this: Would Walt approve of
Grey's Anatomy? The writer of Variety's article says no, but I think the answer is probably more complicated than that.
While Walt was always looking to create entertainment for the kids, he was also concerned with satiating the parents, as well. As stated in the article, Walt created Disneyland as a place that adults could throughly enjoy amongst the hordes of children.
The thought that Walt would not approve of
Grey's Anatomy simply because of it's adult themes is foolish and a little naïve. You have to believe that an entertainer like Mr. Disney would be for any creation beloved by millions of Americans.
Grey's Anatomy isn't
CSI either. It's generally a light-hearted, delightful program.
I understand that this sort of speculation is a tad silly, but there is some undeniable weight to the question of whether an icon like Walt Disney would appreciate something that, in a roundabout way, was actually created by him.
