Meredith's person is about to leave Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter
, Sandra Oh has announced that she will be leaving Grey's Anatomy
at the end of the show's upcoming 10th season.
In a statement to THR, Oh explained that "Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go." She added that the advanced notice is designed to help the show figure out how to say goodbye to her inetegral character. "We have to start the process, story-wise, for the Grey's
writers to think of why she's going to go."
Oh plays Dr. Cristina Yang, Meredith Grey's best friend who has been a key part of Grey's Anatomy
since the very beginning. She will become the third of the five original interns to leave, following Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight.
For her role, Oh has earned a Golden Globe Award, two SAG Awards and five Emmy nominations.
With the departure of Sandra Oh, It could potentially spell the end for Grey's Anatomy
after its upcoming 10th season. That's a long run for any show, though there are still plenty of original cast members and newer faces left to keep it going if ABC chooses to keep it around.
But if it does, Grey's Anatomy
certainly won't be the same without Cristina Yang. She has been integral to the entire series, not just as Meredith's "person," but also for her romances with Preston Burke and Owen Hunt.
Now the mystery is how will the show send her off? Will she simply transfer to another hospital? Or will she be killed off in some grand fashion like George, Lexie or Mark? As much as I love Dr. Yang, the morbid part of me wants to see her meet a gruesome fate as Seattle Grace Mercy Death. Maybe she gets her face torn off by a monkey. Or, in the middle of performing a surgery, she just has a sudden aneurism.Grey's Anatomy
season 10, now known as Dr. Yang's final year, premieres Thursday, September 26 at 9pm on ABC.
