Brooke Smith as Erica Hahn
Brooke Smith, who was born on May 22, 1967 in New York to publicist Lois Smith and her husband, Gene, was educated at American Academy of Dramatic Arts. At a young age, she was exposed to show business and gradually developed a passion for the arts. Her acting debut took place in 1991, when she played the abducted young girl Catherine Martin in
The Silence of the Lambs. Two years later she played Catha the Combine Girl in
The Night We Never Met and in 1994, she played Sonya in
Vanya on 42nd Street. She appeared in a couple of more films before moving on to television, guest starring on
The Hunger,
Law & Order: Criminal Intent,
Six Feet Under,
Heist,
Law & Order and
Crossing Jordan.
Smith's later appearances on television include a guest role on
Dirty Sexy Money, where she played Andrea, and on
Weeds, where she played Valerie Scottson. As for her later films, she worked on
Bad Company as Officer Swanson,
In Her Shoes as Amy, and
The Namesake as Sally.
In 2007, Brooke Smith was cast as Dr. Erica Hahn on the highly watched ABC series,
Grey's Anatomy. In talking about her work with
Grey's Anatomy, she said to TV Guide, "We were kind of excited. I say 'we' because my husband [Steve Lubensky] and I were like, 'Wow, OK.' We had just finished [renovating our apartment] in New York, and put down a deposit on school for our little girl. But, aside from that, we just said, 'All right, I guess we're moving to L.A. for a little while.' But we're going back to New York at the end of this."
Moreover, she said of her character, Dr. Hahn, "Dr. Hahn is a workaholic and she's very professional and I think she feels that there should be professionalism at work, and when other people do things that aren't professional she gets a little upset."
