Sadie, feeling bad about Cristina's predicament, approaches Richard and tells him that since she was responsible for the unauthorized appy, she should be punished instead of Cristina. We find out here that Sadie's father must be a pretty big big-wig because he's the only reason why she is still employed at Seattle Grace.
Cristina finally picks Alex to do the solo surgery because he proved to her to be the most prepared. He goes to find Izzie, who is in post-coital bliss with imaginary Denny in an on-call room bunk bed. Alex announces that he loves her. He frickin' loves her. He promises that he'll never leave her and he'll always be there for her, and he chooses her to be the one who scrubs in with him. When he leaves, Denny says, "I'm beginning to really not like that guy."
Meredith is really hurt that Cristina didn't pick her, so at Derek's prompting, she confronts her about it. Cristina gets upset because her decision to choose Alex had nothing to do with Meredith or the fight that they may or may not be having at the moment. Things are still not very good between these two.
Major McHottie, noticing Cristina's distress, leads her down to some crazy room in the basement. He stands her over a vent from which steam comes whooshing up and, um, makes her feel good in her happy place, I'm guessing? This being the most romantic thing ever for Major McHottie, they start making out.
Mark's larynx patient refuses to even try to talk after the surgery. Her husband is frustrated and upset, but later on, Lexie convinces her to. There's a happy hug between patient and husband, and Lexie is truly amazed at Mark's surgical prowess. So later that night, she goes over to Mark's place. Is he still living in the hotel? Gosh, that must be expensive. She strips down to her skivvies and asks him to "teach" her because he did something amazing by making his patient speak again. Mark gives in to temptation and they get down and dirty, in spite of the promise he made to Derek about not putting Little Sloan in Little Grey.
Richard, still anxious to hire Dixon, wants to know whether she likes Seattle Grace any better. After she gets him to admit that he was indeed torturing Cristina by making her choose among her peers, Dixon hints that she might take the job if the board makes her a better offer.
Right before his surgery, Alex pages Meredith and asks her to scrub in with him, since he's freaking out about telling Izzie about loving her, and she's nowhere to be found. Fortunately, Izzie shows up at the last minute. As Alex performs his first solo surgery, some residents take bets that he'll screw up. In a nice shoutout to season 1 of
Grey's Anatomy, Meredith shushes them and says, "He's one of us."
Who would you have picked for the first solo surgery, if you were Cristina?
