So much for 17-hour work days.

Freshly returning to Grey's Anatomy after shooting a movie, Katherine Heigl will be rather scarce this season on the ABC show. She is set to take another hiatus, this time of the maternal nature, as she plans to spend some quality time with newly adopted daughter Naleigh and husband Josh Kelley. The Ugly Truth star will return to Grey's Anatomy early next year, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Could the Grey's Anatomy people still looking for a plausible storyline to weave Heigl's character Izzie back into the fray? Cancer-stricken Izzie was fired from Seattle Grace and returned this week not as a doctor, but to look over her old grade school science teacher who was showing signs of dementia.

To fill in the gap, a couple of new characters either have been introduced or will be so in the near future. Teddy Altman, played by 24 alum Kim Raver, is Owen's (Kevin McKidd) fellow Iraqi War veteran, a cardio goddess, and his present to girlfriend Cristina (Sandra Oh). Altman will stay put for more than one episode.

Another character will join Grey's Anatomy next week, Riley, to be played by Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" actress Leven Rambin. Riley is someone from Mark Sloan's (Eric Dane) past, possibly a long-lost daughter, and will be pivotal in an upcoming crossover with spin-off Private Practice, set to air in early January. This means Rambin will stay put until then.
