As this week's new episode of Grey's Anatomy rapidly approaches, I'm finding myself thinking about last week's episode in new ways.  In addition to the professional challenges and personal romances that are the hallmarks of classic Grey's, I think that friendships are an integral aspect of the show.  And there were lots of examples of friendship in "State of Love and Trust".
The Original Interns

This is where it all began:  Meredith, Cristina, Izzie, George, and Alex.   There was undeniable chemistry and magic-in-the-making as our Fab Five started as surgical interns.  Now George is dead and Izzie is MIA, but Meredith, Cristina, and Alex continue to make magic.  Scenes like the aftermath of Cristina's "hot cross buns" (oh, Alex, you're so bad) remind me how great this show can be.  Meredith and Alex have always had an interesting dynamic and I'll get to Meredith and Cristina in a minute, but let's talk about Cristina and Alex.  I absolutely love them.  They both have the same snarky sense of humor and a similar approach to their work.  They've both had difficult childhoods.  And they both hide kind, loving hearts underneath their deceptively harsh exteriors.  Alex and Cristina are like a bickering brother and sister.  They may give each other a hard time, but heaven help anyone else who'd do so.  When it counts, they have each other's backs.  They are loyal and true to those they love.  They are family.

How great was that scene in Derek's office between Derek, Mark, and Owen?  These three are terrific together.  I love how the dynamic has evolved over time.  When Owen first arrived at SGMW, Derek and Mark didn't think much of him, but they've gotten to know each other and the end result is so great.  Derek and Owen have been bonding for awhile now and that continues.  Mark and Derek seem to finally be over the Addison hurdle.  And it's kind of cute how Mark seems a little jealous that Owen is becoming Derek's friend.  This scene was so well-written, giving us insights into Mark/Lexie, Derek becoming the chief, and Owen/Cristina (with a little Burke thrown in for good measure) all through the lens of male friendship....something we need more of on a very female-driven narrative like Grey's Anatomy.

Dynamic Duos

Meredith and Cristina.   From almost the very beginning these two have just understood each other.  They are each other's "person".  Both intensely private people, the get each other and trust each other in a way that transcends friendship.  I think they just may be the core relationship of the show.

And how much do I love Mark and Callie?  The former "friends with benefits" are now "just friends" and I adore how they love and care for each other through chicken pox and breakups and impending grandfatherhood and anything else that comes along.

Finally, how about Derek and Miranda?  If you're a long-time viewer of the show (and I've seen every episode...seriously), one of the great pleasures has been to see this friendship evolve.  Their elevator scenes are legendary, but it's the quiet talks and mutual respect that ropes me in every time with these two.  They talk to each other in a completely unique way and I love it because at the end of the day, we all need our friends.
