Grey's Anatomy begins tonight with all the second-year residents anxiously awaiting the decision on who gets the first solo surgery. As they wait nervously Bailey (
Chandra Wilson) crows to them that she got the first solo surgery as a second-year. She makes a dig at Izzie's (
Katherine Heigl) LVAD-wire cutting incident, which I cannot get enough of. By the way, imaginary Denny (
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who looks very thin. Has he always been this gaunt? Perhaps hunting demons and then turning into a ghost is taking a toll on him) is still attached at the hip to Izzie, who seems to have gotten used to him.
Richard (
James Pickens Jr.) and attendings have made their decision. The vote is unanimous: everyone agrees that Cristina (
Sandra Oh) should be awarded the first solo surgery. However, since she is still in deep doo-doo because her interns were secretly removing each other's appendices, she is no longer in the running. Therefore, Richard decides that she must choose who among her colleagues gets to fly solo. Also, since all of the interns are still grounded, the person Cristina picks will get to choose one fellow resident to scrub in. The first surgery will be a below-the-knee amputation. Another thing that Cristina must do to is make sure that Virginia Dixon (
Mary McDonnell) is still impressed by the hospital so that she'll accept a position there to replace the recently departed Hahn (
Brooke Smith).
Naturally, all the residents suck up to Cristina. They hound her all day long, pleading their case to her, one by one. George (
T.R. Knight) reminds her how much he has learned and grown as a surgeon. Alex can't bring himself to suck up because he doesn't play that game. Instead, he describes in precise detail how exactly to perform a below-the-knee amputation to prove how prepared he is. Meredith (
Ellen Pompeo) passive-aggressively says that she doesn't want this surgery to affect their friendship, even though she is clearly the most deserving. Izzie doesn't really plead her case; she just tells Cristina that she is currently enjoying mind-blowing sex (with imaginary Denny).
Dixon advises Cristina to make a system, ranking each of her colleagues by their various merits. However, Major McHottie (
Kevin McKidd) tells her to trust her gut, because that's the way they do it in war.
Bailey, who recently admitted to Callie that she needs a challenge to rediscover her passion for surgery, wants in on a very cutting edge surgery that Mark (
Eric Dane) has today. The patient, Kathleen, can't talk because she had a laryngectomy several years ago, so Mark will be reconstructing a larynx for her. Kathleen seems really pissed off, pretty much ignoring her husband and her doctors, and communicates curtly in one-word responses written on Post-it notes. Lexie (
Chyler Leigh), is still on probation, but Mark lets her be on cappuccino duty for him.
