Dr. Calliope "Callie" Torres is a resident orthopedic surgeon who is romantically involved with intern
George O'Malley. There is not much information regarding Callie’s past, except that she was raised by a rich family in South Florida and was somewhat of an outcast in school.
Callie and George first met when George suffered a dislocated shoulder after he tripped and fell down the stairs. Callie was the one who set George’s shoulder back into place, during which she realized that it was him who carried out an open-heart surgery in a stalled elevator. Callie immediately felt attracted to George and gave him her number, hoping he would call her up for a date. It took George a long time to find the courage to ask her out, and when he did, Callie’s bold and brave attitude complemented George’s meek but endearing personality. Following the rituals of courtship, Callie and George started dating, and when George finds out that Callie has been living in the hospital basement, he asked her to even out his haircut, afterwhich they consummated their relationship.
Callie’s affection for George caused her to react negatively towards Dr. Meredith Grey, who was George’s previous love interest and disastrous one-night-stand. Callie also found it hard to get along with
Dr. Izzie Stevens, who is George’s self-proclaimed best friend. Callie was also the first one to say “I love you,” but George did not return the endearment, which greatly upset Callie. They reconciled when George explained that the reason why he didn’t respond back was because he wanted to say it at a time when he truly meant it. However, because George could not seem to prioritize Callie over Meredith and Izzie, she eventually broke up with him. In George’s absence, she slept with Dr. Mark Sloan, but soon regretted her actions. She found a friend in
Dr. Addison Montgomery, who also had a relationship with the plastic surgeon.
When George found out that Callie had slept with Mark, he was infuriated and refused to speak with Callie. Callie still lent her support to George, especially when his father was admitted at the hospital. After George’s father’s death, she provided George with some comfort by sleeping with him. Eventually, George popped the question, and they tied the knot in Las Vegas. As a married couple, Callie admitted that her parents were wealthy, and George, upset that he spent a significant amount of money at the hotel where they were staying, confided in Izzie. As a result, Callie felt betrayed and fought with George, which drove him back into the welcoming arms of Izzie.
