It's only the second week of the
Gossip Girl season, and already, I feel like I'm just repeating myself over and over about how much Blair Waldorf rocks.
One of Blair's key traits is that she often gets carried away in playing the Audrey Hepburn movie in her head. She's only known Marcus' true identity for 12 hours and she's already planning on becoming his consort. She moves faster than any of us would were we in her Christian Louboutin strappy sandals, but
Leighton Meester is so brilliant at playing Blair that we really feel for her when she descends into moments of self-doubt. “I'm his secret summer shame!” she laments to Serena (
Blake Lively).
It's disconcerting seeing Blair at someone else's mercy because she is the one we would all choose to be. If only we had the wherewithal to come up with snappy comebacks like hers! Yes, she so desperately wants Marcus' favor, but like any male character on
Gossip Girl who is not Chuck (
Ed Westwick), Marcus is so dopey that he hardly wields the power in that relationship and wouldn't know what to do with it even if he did. It's the step-monster, Cougar Catherine, whom Blair must win over.
Happily, luck is on our Queen B's side. She successfully gains the upper hand by walking in on Cougar Catherine (Madchen Amick) and Nate (
Chace Crawford) during coitus. Always able to think on her feet, Blair jumps at the opportunity to seize control. It wouldn't be Blair if she didn't claw her way back on top, by any means necessary, as she did in the turf war against Jenny Humphrey (
Taylor Momsen) in the last season of
Gossip Girl. Cougar Catherine doesn't stand a chance.
Best Blair Lines of “Never Been Marcused”
“I have to present myself as a crown jewel—surrounded by other, smaller, slightly flawed gems but quality stones nonetheless.”
Chuck: “I thought you might like to meet my friend.”
Blair: “Why? So she can warn me about the effects of too much Botox?”
[
later]
Blair: “Your work is flawless.”
“She made ‘Waldorf' rhyme with ‘Spears'!”
“Can I just say how sorry I am that I judged you earlier? I thought you were just a callow, social-climbing former swimsuit model who married above her station only to be enslaved by her own insecurities. When I saw you rolling around on the floor with my adolescent ex, I realized you have a compassionate side.”
